Chumphon town is the main city in
Chumphon province southern Thailand.
From Bangkok to Chumphon is around 450 km along the Gulf of Thailand,
the main highway No. 41
cross from north to south. There is a Chumphon
airport and some beach resorts on a few Chumphon
beaches such as Chumphon cabana resort, a Chumphon
cheap hotel is also available actually there are
many.
Chumphon hotels are usually frequented by Thai
people, there are almost no tourists around. The
only exception are foreigners who come to Chumphon
to use the ferry to Koh Tao, a great scuba diving
destination a few kilometers off the coast. Chumphon
to Koh Tao is just a short ride on the ferry.
From Chumphon to
Koh Samui
further south its about 3 hours drive until reaching
the ferry to Ko Samui and
Koh Phangan and to
Phuket its 500 km
either via Surat Thani or Ranong. The main Thailand
north south highway runs always just a short
distance, between 200m and 1 kilometer along the
coast. Accommodations in Chumphon province are
plenty but rather on the budget level except some
resorts at
Koh Tao who supply
upper range accommodation.
Chumphon province is very little developed for any kind
of tourist activities. It's strange since Chumphon
province has about 250 km of coastline and plenty of
attractive Islands with a lot of beautiful beaches -the beaches are not maintained,
that means lots of junk is laying around- , coral
reefs -further out in the sea- and very clear water.
Since the Chumphon province borders the Gulf of
Thailand the weather is also quite stable there
is less rain than the western area bordering the
Andaman Sea. A few good hotels and beach resorts are
around but most people just drive |

through on their way from
Bangkok to the
south.
Chumphon region southern Thailand has its
attractions and is worth
exploring, the strong point in terms of tourism in Chumphon
is that the whole area is quite untouched and
covered with lush tropical vegetation, it looks very
pretty. Even huge wide trees give shadow on
the highway.
The bad news is that the Chumphon No.41 highway -that is Thailand's north - south highway
running from Bangkok all the way down to the
Malaysian border- is in bad condition not only
around Chumphon.
Holes and very bad repair works lets the car
jump up and down, the driver is forced into a
permanent slalom to avoid the worst.
