Krabi,
Phang Nga Bay and the Trang archipelago are probably
the most scenic and attractive costal region in Asia.
During the last few years and especially after Krabi Airport
was opened, the region became one of
Thailand's
very popular travel and "green" destination.
A feast for the eyes,
places to relax, beaches, jungle, rock climbing, excellent food, good and very good Krabi hotels for
all sizes of wallets, spa's, friendly people but the prices are higher compared with other tourist spots in southern Thailand,
on many items and services up to 3 times the prices they ask in Phuket.
Approaching Krabi from Phuket via highway 4
several pleasant surprises for the eyes are offered, some parts the cruise
leads through dense jungle, on other places the bizarre limestone
formations models the hills.
Creeping up those limestone formations around Krabi is a carpet of
dense green to serve as a habitat for many insects, small animals
(the bigger ones are already gone), birds, flowers and plants.
In the last 10
years the people of Krabi southern Thailand got a little bit more
conscious about their environment and don't destroy for quick money, it paid
of somehow.
Along
the excellent road from Phuket - Phang Nga to
Krabi very tall jungle trees stand out from the thick undergrowth. |
|
The
main highway has been upgraded around Krabi to 4 lanes
which
adds a lot of safety for the traveler since as usual no one cares
about any traffic rules and the other, but since there is more space
now there is also more space to avoid an accident.

rubber plantation and oil palm plantation,
both blend nicely into the green

and are again dotted by the huge
limestone hills.
The top highlight of Krabi is the great panoramas
of Railay Beach at Phra Nang Bay on Railay
peninsula. |

Along Ao Nang Railay
Beach are plenty of Beach Hotels and Railay
Beach Resorts plus some bungalows on the beach.
The surrealistic limestone or karst formations
pulling out of the Phang Nga Bay give a great
panorama.
Railay vacation or holiday or maybe just a Railay
day trip should be on the agenda of |

everyone visiting Krabi
province. The Ao Nang Beach area is also the primary
Krabi nightlife spot but no discos around and no
hanky panky glitter night business like in Phuket.

Krabi Rock Climbing Railay

The level of climbing can be as simple
as bouldering or as challenging as tackling
over vertical cliffs. This makes Thailand a
popular rock climbing destination since it
has something for everyone. |
One of the most interesting part of travel
to Krabi in southern Thailand
is the route
Phuket Krabi, this is Thai road travel at
its best, is a feast for the eyes. First
from Phuket province to Phang Nga Bay, a
short long tail boat ride from the pier at
Phang Nga bay is highly recommended the pier
is just a few minutes off the main Phuket
Krabi highway at the intersection next to
the Bunga Hotel is. A three hour ride with
the boat costs about Baht 1000,- this is
negotiable. The boat passes James Bond
Island, the muslim fishing village at Koh Panyi
Island and into the moves into the great
water world of Phang Nga Bay.
Krabi
On the southern section of the "tail" of
Thailand, Krabi has a wide variety of rock
climbing "garden". Most of the climbs in
this area are of the pre-bolted sport route
variety. There are literally hundreds upon
hundreds of climbs with difficulty levels
from beginner to multi-pitch knuckle
crushers.
The beauty of climbing in Krabi
is...well, the beauty. While you might
have visions of jungles and mosquitoes when
thinking of Thailand, Krabi is an area of a
different sort. Most of the climbs have been
set up on cliff faces on the beach. Being
natural capitalists, the Thai's have built
hotels, bars and so on at these locations.
As a result, you can literally climb a
multi-pitch route for five hours, cool off
with a swim and then have a beer. If there
is such a thing as a rock climbing heaven,
many feel Krabi is it.

Before you cash in your savings, keep in
mind that Thailand is a seasonal vacation
spot. If you go during the wet monsoon
season, there is a good chance you'll just end up sitting
around drinking beer. While that isn't too bad, you'll go
crazy looking at the climbs that are so close, but oh so far
away.
Generally, you want to head to Thailand
from late November through maybe April.
The summer months tend to be both incredibly
hot and wet. Make sure you pull up forecasts
for the area before booking a trip. Flying
to Thailand is inexpensive, but flights are
incredibly long with stopovers. Still, it is
all worth it once you experience Thailand
rock climbing.
